Loreto Carmona Chilean, b. 1981
Working with hand embroidery, burlap potato sacks and found objects, Loreto Carmona builds allegories about the processes of transculturation in Latin America, from conquest and colonization through contemporary migrations. Her work questions the systems of representation that define the region, weaving territory and memory into a single search for identity.
Loreto Carmona Manaut (Santiago, Chile, 1981) holds a degree in Fine Arts with a major in Painting from Universidad Finis Terrae (2005) and completed a postgraduate program in Media and Technology at the Instituto Universitario Nacional del Arte in Buenos Aires (2007). She has exhibited actively in Chile since 2009, and since 2016 her work has expanded internationally, including participation in Bienalsur (Lima) and the SIART Biennial (La Paz), as well as a residency at the Instituto Cervantes in Moscow.
Among her most recent solo exhibitions are Columnas Blandas and Geografía Dinámica (2023, Santiago) and Provincia (2022, Centro Cultural Montecarmelo). Her work has also been part of international fairs such as Ch.ACO, ArtLima and Pinta Miami.
She lives and works in Santiago, Chile.

My work is based on research around the processes of transculturation and consequent evolutionary unleashing in Latin America since conquest, colonization and subsequent migrations, through a common heritage: the image. In a constant collection, gathering and intervention of images and materialities, I assemble allegories from which I question systems of representation that define us as region. They are bodies illustrating reflections and thoughts around the history of an exotizised and marked ground since the first encounter. My work immerses itself in a constant search through the meaning of the word identity, which stands out trying to highlight the codification of the meaning of being South American.
